You have been having a class discussion on the people who influence the way we behave.
You have made the notes below.
Our family and friends
The media
Famous personalities
Write an essay for your tutor discussing two of the factors in your notes. You should explain which factor influences our behaviours the most, and provide reasons to support your opinion.
„No man is an island.“ All of us are less or more influenced by others, which lies on us a great deal of responsibility for wisely choosing those „others“, although we can affect it to some extent only.
The most significant impact of our lives have people who were given to us – our family, especially the nuclear one which contains our parents and siblings. They were here to help us understand the world around and how to feel about it. Is this world a safe and friendly place to live at? Am I welcomed here? Or should I be rather careful or even scared? Answers to such questions, often not expressed loudly, are crucial to form our views as well as self-awareness and self-confidence.
Psychologists believe that our personalities are almost done and dusted when we reach the age of five years. Is this the good or bad news? Given that we were lucky to be born to a loving family, probably we gained the ability to distinguish between good and bad (people, things, information…). On the other hand, if we were not born under a lucky star and our early years were rather hardship, we may be more likely in risk of being attracted by mean people who come our way or by bad ideas coming for example through media.
As indicated above, media is often to blame of having bad influence on us, but is it really the case? Undoubtedly media means one of the biggest player and powerful tool which can be misused not only for advertising purposes, but also, and more dangerously as a political actor, yet at the same time, in democratic system it works also as a watchdog that keeps an eye on those who are in charge.
In conclusion, however hard it is, the responsibility is ours. It is we who have to carefully pick our partners, friends, mates as well as schools and teachers for us and our children. It is also no-one else but we who decide which books, movies or websites are worthy our precious time. Nelson Mandella once said “With freedom comes responsibility” and I could not agree more.
