The reading and the lecture are discussing the phenomenon of the quakers sounds, which is heard by the Russian sailors in the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean. The author of the article suggests three possible explanations for these sounds, however, the lecturer refutes all these explanations one by one.
First of all, the reading argues that these sounds maybe the sounds of some whale called Ocra, which lives in this area. These whales are known to make some noisy sounds during the time of courtship. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this suggestion by stating that although it is true that the Ocra whales live in this area, but they live near the surface of the water which would lead to being detected by the submarines or the sonar system.
Secondly, the reading mentions another possibility which is that these sounds could be the sounds of giant marine animal called Squid that lives in this area. The lecturer rebuts this claim by saying that these animal lived in this area all the time, and that does not explain why these sounds were heard in during two decades and then disappeared suddenly. If it was the sounds of the animals, it would continue to happen until now.
Finally, the reading mentions that these sounds may be the sounds of some secret hidden submarine that uses advanced technology that enables it to be undetected. In contrast, the lecturer argues against this claim by providing some scientific information that tells us that until now there is no submarine that is able to move so fast, besides, the engine of the submarine would be heard because of the noise, consequently, the submarine would be easily detected.
in conclusion, it is unlikely that any of the reasons that are mentioned in the reading passage to be the real reason of these sounds. The lecturer refuted all the given possible reasons effectively.
