(The complete guide to the toefl test, practice exam 1)
Integrated task
The lecture's subject is the changes that have been on the knowledge about risk-taking personality, and the professor explain them by comparing an article written seventy years ago and the present theories about the topic.
He says that nowadays psychologists have a more tolerant position and they don't think anymore that it only exists a universal risk-taking personality, instead, they make a diference between risk-takers and suicidals. The first kind of people, although the writter of the article don't think so, obtain rewards for their actions, chemical, physical and psychological reward, in addition they take risk because they consider they can do it without bad consecuences. Tha professor uses the example of the motorbike riders, because they know that they have skills and experience enogh to do what they do.
In the other hand, there are people, who take unnecesary risks and in the article's writer opinion it would not be a risk-taker, for example the smokers, who know that what they do is unhealthy, but they do anyway.
In the professor's opinion, the difference sould not be between if the risk is good for the rest of the people or no, he believes that the difference is between the people who hurt themeselves intentionally (smokers) and yhe ones who try not to do it or do it unintentionally (Motorbike riders).
In conclusion, the professor thinks that the old definition of the risk-taking personality is no longer adequate and he states the one he considers more precise.
