The complex interactions between drugs and the human body is an intriguing phenomenon that has fueled my curiosity about drug efficacy and its application in curative treatment. This influenced my decision to earn a bachelor's degree in Pharmacy at a reputable Nigerian university. After graduation, I resolved never to stop pursuing opportunities to advance to a higher level, and the European master in public health (Europubhealth+) programme provides me with the opportunity to gain relevant skills and expand my knowledge in a field related to my current professional specialization area. This double-degree programme is particularly appealing because it is a logical extension of my current skills and qualifications. As an undergraduate, I took courses in biostatistics, toxicology, clinical pharmacy, and microbiology among others that taught me a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. Similarly, the Europubhealth+ programme provides a comprehensive curriculum that will reinforce previously acquired knowledge and skills in epidemiology, health promotion, and evidence-driven research, and position me better as I work to address health disparities, and curb the menace of health hazards in my community.
Also, I’m interested in this programme because it is a perfect fit for my career goals and will allow me to make a lifelong difference in the healthcare industry. With a Europubhealth+ double-degree, I will positively impact my community by ensuring that everyone is aware of the health risks that influence common infectious diseases, and how to prevent them through educational programs and initiatives. In the same vein, I will apply my knowledge of environmental and occupational agents as well as of environmental risk assessment methods to assess, prevent and control environmental and occupational hazards that pose risks to human health and safety. This programme will allow me to develop strong competencies in evaluating health environments, identifying disparities, strategizing interventions, and creating trusting relationships with residents and officials to improve the quality of care in my community.
The foundations for success in any field include dedication, hard work, and discipline. My undergraduate studies were taxing, but I eventually excelled in them because I consistently demonstrated these foundation qualities. As an intern at the University Health Services of my alma mater, I acquired an intimate knowledge of practical Pharmacy in a real-world situation; I had frequent ward rounds with senior colleagues, which exposed me to qualitative pharmacist-patient interactions and undertook detailed analyses of patients' case notes and medication charts which allowed me to assess the real-time negative impact of several disease conditions in health. All of this knowledge and personal qualities will come in handy in the course of my graduate programme.
Likewise, I have volunteered and worked part-time at different community pharmacies in my city. This volunteering and paid experiences have provided me with insights beyond the stereotypical assumption of a Pharmacist's job consisting only of dispensing drugs. Such work has helped to revamp both my organizational skills and my communication skills too. The study period at two prestigious universities in Dublin and Paris will allow me to collaborate with diverse international students. This type of collaboration will help me improve my teamwork skills for working in multidisciplinary teams and my leadership skills for leading and training others. Effective leadership requires communication, confidence, and intellectual and emotional strength, all of which I will have the opportunity to develop while studying. Realizing the limitations of my current knowledge, I am ready and eager to begin this master's programme in Europe. Also, I look forward to learning with a group of peers who will support and learn from one another as we advance and broaden our understanding of public health concepts.
