The graph below shows the percentage of the populations aged 65 or over between 1940 to 2040 in three different countries.
The graph line provides a breakdown in percentages of aging people in Japan, Sweden and the USA over the period of 100 years, from 1940 to 2040.
Overall, it is clear that the elderly population in the three named countries is predicted to increase dramatically by 2040. According to the statistical predictions, the largest proportion of retired people will be in Japan, while the US will account for the smallest percentage, both at about 25%.
Japan's population bottomed out over the time frame composed from 1940 to 2000. Subsequently, it recovered and it increased steadily to about 7% in 2010. From the current year forth, it is estimated that the figures will soar reaching a peak in 2030.
Sweden and the USA followed a similar pattern of increase in population. At the beginning of the period 7% of the population in Sweden was of retired people, while the population aged 65 or above in the US was just under 10 %, figure that remained evened out from 1960 until the present year. This percentage is expected to keep leveled off until about 2020, when the percentage will increase to around 23%. Meanwhile, in Sweden the percentages will fluctuate until the end of the span period.
