The reading states that the doctors should adopt electronic database in spite of the traditional paper to record patient's medical information since it has got many advantages. However, the lecturer casts doubts on the claims made in the reading by presenting some counter-arguments. She believes that the advantages of the electronic medical record system are uncertain.
Firstly, the author points out that electronic medical record system will reduce the cost by saving money on storing and transferring the records. In addition, the space required to store is negligible and also the data can be accessed from anywhere. This point is challenged by the lecturer and she states that the paper records will still be used and kept for emergency purposes since it contains the signature of the patients and acts as a legal record. Therefore, the money would not be saved because paper records will still need a storage cost.
Secondly, the author contends that since electronic records have a standard format of forms and do not require someone to write down the information, so chances of human error are less. Nonetheless, the lecturer rebuts this argument and suggest that doctor fill the information of patients by a pen on a paper and then this information is transferred by the nurse later on in the electronic database, so due to poor handwriting, the errors are still possible.
Finally, the author states that it helps the researchers to find information more easily on an electronic database sitting anywhere in the world. The professor, on the other hand, posits that according to the privacy law, the researchers can not have an access to the records because the rules are pretty strict and they would need permission from patients to have the access. Moreover, the patient can block the use of medical records too.
