The table shows the Proportions of Pupils Attending Four Secondary School Types Between Between 2000 and 2009.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The table illustrates the percentages of students recorded at each of the four secondary school types available, namely specialist, grammar, voluntary-controlled and community schools in a period of 9 years, from 2000 to 2009. Overall, it can be seen that during the period the initial top option of voluntary-controlled schools witnessed a dramatical drop of its proportions, while community schools' percentages experienced a substantial increase.
To begin, voluntary-controlled schools seem to have been pupils' favourite option in 2000, as above half of them were studying there. At the same year, about one out of four students were attending grammar schools, while the percentages referring to specialist and community schools were relatively low.
In 2005, significant changes on the proportions of voluntary-controlled and community schools can be observed, with the former dropping to 38% and the later increasing by 20%, to 32%. On the other hand, the figures of the other types of institution remained approximately at the same level, experiencing a slight decrease in preference.
The trends were the same after 2005, with the percentages of community schools climbing to 58% whereas those regarding voluntary-controlled schools dropped to 20%, in 2009. In that year, the rest of the institutions of education were clearly less popular, with only one out of ten children attending a specialist school and 12% of pupils studying at grammar schools.
