The graph below shows the number of complaints made about noise to Environmental Health authorities in the city of Newtown between 1980 and 1996.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The graph illustrates the number of citizens of Newtown that reported to be irritated by noise to the responsible authorities, namely Environmental Health authorities, in a period of 16 years, from 1980 to 1996.
Overall, the number of complaints appears to be significantly increased during this period, as the initial total of about 1800 reports picked at 2400 in 1996. These mainly regarded factory and domestic activities, while road works and traffic noise were less frequently considered annoying.
Complaints about factories and household presented a generally increasing behaviour. Although the number of reports concerning household dropped from 500 to 400 in 1986, it grew swiftly after 1988, exceeding 1200 reports. In contrast, the number of complaints made about factory noise increased steadily from 400 to 700 charges per year during the first six years and remained relatively constant after 1986.
According to the graph, noises caused at streets by road works and traffic noise are considered less annoying than the previous mentioned. Although roadworks were the primary source of noise during the first couple of years, the relevant reports were decreasing every year, reaching a minimum of one hundred. However, this was not the case for traffic noise reported problems which, despite the fact that they were also not increased until 1988, they subsequently rose from 200 to 600 per year.
To conclude, the graph indicates clearly the household and factories as the main sources of irritating noise, followed by road works and traffic processes.
