asteroids establishing colonies
In the lecture, the professor don't think it is practical to establish clonies on asteriod.
First and foremost, although the low gravity of asteriod makes it easier to for spacecraft to land and take off, the low gravity also introduces some risks. For example, losing gravity could render humans to lose muscel mass and bone density, which can cause severe health problems. Therefore, low gravity has it downsides that will threat the longterm colonization.
Moreover, it is true some precious metals that are ralitively rare on Earth could be found on asteriods, but it may not be as profitable as expexted. On one hand, the cost of supporting the colonies on asteriods and trasporting the metals could overpass the profit brought by the metals. On the other hand, if the supply of the currently rare metals or minerals increase, it will be likely that the maket price of those metals or mierals will decrease, making the profit uncertain.
Last but not the least, due to the changing distance between the asteriods and Earth orbit, reaching the asteriod easily doesn't mean reaturing to Earth would be that easy. Because some asterios will move away from Eatrh, even farrther than Mars. And when the asteriods move away form Earth, returing the Earth can be a challenge.
