The reading passage claims that during 1960 until 1980 Russian submarines patrolling in the Arctic Ocean and they heard a strange sound called quackers. In fact, the source of this sound is still undetectable, but there are several theories suggested the source of this sound. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author points out that this sound may have caused by male and female orca whale deep in the ocean when they called each other for ritual courtship. In contrast, the lecturer brings up the idea that Orca whales live near the ocean in contrast to submarines, which are deep in the ocean. So, in this situation, hardly can submarine hear the sound.
Furthermore, the author embraces the idea that perhaps this sound created by giant squads that are intelligent and invertebrate animals live deep in the ocean when reached in close contact with submarines. Conversely, the professor underlines the idea that Russian submarines first detected the sound and reported it. But after years, the sound disappear entirely. So, if the sound was the sound of squads, it could not start and stop regularly because they are also living there.
Finally, as set forth by the author other foreign submarines might play a role when hearing this sound because there is a possibility that they did not register on sonar, which is able to detect the sound under water. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that source of sound tended to move around and changed direction quickly and submarines were not able to move quickly and changed their direction. Also, there were no technologies to build such submarines to move faster.
Having scrutinized all the suggestions, a logical conclusion that can be drawn is that there is much evidence having been ignored by the author while the presence of which could strengthen the author's claim.
