Both the article and the lecture are Discussing one of Rembrandt's painting. The article states that the painting is not actually done by Rembrandt, and provides three reasons for support. However the professor believes that the painting was made by Rembrandt and casts doubt on the claims made in the reading.
First, the reading states that the woman in the painting was wearing fur coat which inconsistent with the whole theme of the picture, since she is appearantly a servant. The professor, however, refutes this point, she says that fur coat, indeed, was sdded by another painter after many years in order to make the girl in the picture looks like an aristocratic lady and rise the value of the portray.
Second, the article claims that while Rembrand was expert and he mastered the shadow and light technic on his paints, this picture acually showed a major mistakes. This point was argued by the peofessor, she states that in the the original depict the illumination of the women face was correct but after the addition of the coat , so, if the caot is removed, we can see the normal consistency between orginal dress and the illumination of the women face.
Finally, the reading posits that the wood in the back of the painting is consist of multiple pieces of woods that glued together and this thing is unusual in the other Rmberdant's paintings. The professor, nonetheless, rebute this point, she states that the original painting was made in single piece of wood just like his other paintings and the pieces of wood was added later on, similar to the coat to make the painting more precious.
