Both the article and the lecture are discussing the reasons for the decline of the sea otters from different perspectives. The article states that the sea pollution is the major cause for that and provides three reasons of support. However the professor believes that the presence of predator for the sea otter is the real explanation of this phenomenon and casts doubt on the author's reasons.
Firstly, the article claims that the water sample from places near to Alaskan coast has proved to be contaminated with chemicals that can reduce the otter resistance to the infections and thus, can be the cause of their decline. However, the professor refutes this point. She says that if the pollution was the cause behind the accelerating death of the otters, then people should be able to find thier bodies along the shore, but actually this did not happen. Furthermore, if the predator kill te then the water cannot wash them to the surface which is most likely, so, this supports the assumtion that a significab=nt predator is behaind this phenomenon.
Secondly, while the reading posits that the number of othe sea mammals have been decrased along the Alaskan coast and this provides a good support to the pollution theory since the only animals that can lead to such losses " the orcas" is actually prefer the larger animales. This point was argued by the professor. She states that it is most probably that the orcas started to feed on small sea mammels because most of the larger animals have been hunted by the Humans.
Finally, the reading argues that the uneven distribution of the otters numbers is enough support for the pollution hypothesis since the maximum reduction of the otters is found the ares of the highly pollutant water. The professor, nonthe less, refutes this point. She point out that the orcas has really huge size, so, it is hunttenig to the prey depends on the location, and if it is accessible to the orcas or not. Accordingly, most the are which has larger number of the the otters are, in fact, the rocky and shallow areas which are not accessible to the orcas.
