The reading and the lecture are both about the genetic modification of trees. The author of the reading believes that it is advantageous to adapt the genetic modification, thus, it can produce better produce of fruits and can withstand typhoons. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the author points out that genetic modified are more sturdier compared to nature trees, and is more likely to survive. The author mentioned that in Hawaii, new pest resistant papaya trees was developed to counteract the infestation of ringspot virus, thus, this new technology eradicate the problem in this virus. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that certain species will be only resistant to the virus and their survival is uncertain. he elaborates on this by mentioning that genetic modification tress are the unified, in a sense, that all species will be affected if climate become to change and new pest may invade, as a result their whole colony will be extinct.
Secondly, the author contends that more economic benefits will flourish with the use of these genetic modified trees. The article establishes that farmers income may double due to greater yield of crops, fruits and products are sturdier. Nevertheless, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that in this advancement in the modification of trees, companies will be the ones to gain more profit through hidden cost they are charging for the use of the seeds. He elaborates on this by mentioning that farmers must pay the company every time they will plant the seeds, also, when they collect seed they must pay for it.
Finally, the author states that genetic modified trees can prevent over exploitation of the wild trees. The article notes that it can because of its fast growth and higher yield in an area, thus, can offer solutions to rapid decline in trees around the world. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the effects on local wild trees will be more harmful later on. Moreover, He puts forth the idea that they grow aggressively which competes with other trees nutrient and sunlight.
