According to the reading, employing the electronic records can decrease the costs on storing as well as transporting substantially as paper records actually occupied space. In addition, electronic records allow doctors to acquire the records conveniently. The lecturer argues that doctors would still retain the paper records as they need back-up for emergency and signatures for legal reasons. Consequently, the storage costs are still required.
Also, the author claims that electronic medical records can reduce errors since it can avoid nonstandard forms and improper transcription of data. The lecturer points out that the doctors still use pen and paper to take notes and then the medical staff enters the information into systems. Hence, during the transcription process, the poor handwriting still causes mistakes.
Finally, the author further states that electronic medical records can benefit medical research as the large amount of data from patients are available in the systems. The lecturer challenges that the information of patients are difficult to access in practical since the privacy legislation in the US is very strict. Researchers may encounter complex procedures. Furthermore, it is highly likely that patients are reluctant to permit the access to their records.
