The author states that there are three theories about the main causes of the extinction of the Steller's sea cow who is a huge creature lived in water in Siberia, and he provides three reasons for support. However, the professor claims that we still do not know the main causes of the extinction and there are problems with the three theories, and he refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading asserts the sea cow may have been overhunted by the native Siberian people. The lecture counters this idea by saying that the sea cow was a massive creature about nine meters in length and ten tons in weight, and the population of the native Siberian was not very large. So if they did hunt, they do not need many of them. Therefore, the hunting of the native people is not the cause of extinction.
Second, the article points out that the sea cow population became extinct because of the disturbance in the ecosystem caused a decline in their food resources. The professor contradicts this point by telling that if the ecosystem disturbance was severed in 1768, other parts also should be affected not only the kelp which is the main food source for sea cow. In fact, the fishing ship not recorded any decline for the whales at that time. That's mean there was no food shortage for the sea cow.
Third, the reading explains that the extinction of the sea cow caused by the European fur trades who came after 1741. However, the professor posits that the sea cow population was small a long period before 1700. Therefore, the European traders are not the cause of extinction because they arrived after the decline, and there is another cause of the decline in the sea cow population.
