The reading passage discusses that several reasons and evidence that shows that Whalse navigate using stars. While in the listening the professor casts doubts on what is presented in the text and believes that this reasons are fasinating but they are not convencing.
First of all, in the text it is clearly mentioned that the Whales are intelligent animals with well developed cognitive ability to use complex stimuli like sky for orientation. However, the porfessor claims that there is not a real conection between intelligent andusing stars for nagigation. For example, other animals used stars for navigation for intence birds and dogs, but birds are not very intelligent and the dogs have average intelligent. Thus the conection betwween intelligent and navigation is not reasonable. And dogs do this because of another reason not their intelligent.
In addition, the professor disagrees with this idea that becuase the Whales migrate in straight lines so they used an external force for navigation and this is the stars. He says that the external force is magnetic feild not stars. The Whales have a magnetied in their body and they used it for navigation using Earth magnetic feild.
Finally, in the text it is stated that humpback Whales do spy-hopping behavior and they do it for looking at the upward and watching the sky and stars. The professor subscribes that other animals like shraks do spy-hopping but they did not this behavior for navigation because they do not migrate and they do spy-hopping for hunting and find prey. And it is possible that the humpback whales doing spy-hopping for the same reason.
