For married females, those who had children made up 12% which was 14% lower than the proportion of those with dependent children.

Apparently, the poverty rate of males under 5 years old was just over 20% and then decreased gradually to approximately to 7% when they reached 59 years old. After that, the males' poverty rate had a slight increase to about 9% at the age range of 60-64 before dropping inappreciably to around 6% at the age range of 75 and over. There was a similar trend for females as their poverty rates fell, starting from about 21% at the age of under 5 to nearly 15% when they were 75 and older. It is also worth noting that the lowest poverty rate of females was at the age range from 45 to 54, about 8% only.

The pie chart illustrates the percentage of women in United States, from various family structures, living in poverty during the year 2008. The pie chart compares rate of poverty that prevailed among different sexes and age groups.
It is evident that women faced far more financial constraints than men and by far the most affected group was single women with no dependent children.
The most financially secure population was married women with no dependent children as only 8% of then lived under poverty line. In contrast, single women with no dependent children comprised more than half of the poor population.
While women of all age groups were affected more by poverty than men of same age, just above 20% poverty-stricken women belonged to age group 18-24 and under 5. On the other hand, as the age increased, a steadily decreasing trend could be seen in men. While 20% of 5 years faced financial difficulties, in those over 75 years these figures had dropped to less than 5%
