Shopping Centers
Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss the impact of shopping centers. The passage presents the advantages of shopping centers, opposed by the professor.
The passage states that shopping centers' constructions will create jobs for an area's local population. In fact, if shops are built, there will be a need of people to work in the sales, administration, and maintenance departments. The professor agrees that constructing shopping centers will generate job opportunities; however, she argued that the new jobs will not benefit the local population, for people who usually built shopping centers are strangers and likely to employ people from their nations.
The author of the passage claims that erecting shopping centers in an area will allow the development of other businesses. The professor casts doubts on this claim by arguing that small businesses are unlikely to evolve in the presence of a shopping center because people will not be eager to purchase in small market while there is a great center.
The reading passage argues that shopping centers will provide opportunity for diversity of product so that clients can purchase everything they want. The professor state that although shopping centers are great stores, they are not necessarily diverse. The professor explained that products in most shopping centers are also found in other markets, which is the opposite of diversity - a diverse shops have their own unique products.
