the chart below gives information about the percentage of the adult population who were overweight in four different countries in 1980, 1990 and 2000.
A glance at the chart provided reveals the upward trends in the figures of the adult population were overweight over a 20 year period, from 1980 to 2000 in four selected countries, namely: Japan, Finland, Australia and the USA.
Overall, it is immediately apparent that all four countries witnessed similar upward trends over the given period though the USA increased at a faster pace. Another outstanding feature is that the USA had the highest percentage of overweight adults.
As regards the obese levels in the USA, it can be clearly seen that in 1980, the proportion started at 15%. The figures for Finland and Australia were lower, at about 6% and 8% respectively. Japan had the lowest figure at 1%. In 1990, the percentage of overweight adults in the USA rose to around 25% of the population, while the figures for Finland and Australia reached just under 10% and the figure for Japan remained steady.
By 2000, the proportion of weighty adolescents was highest still in the USA and lowest in Japan, at about 30% and 3% in turn. In comparison with the figure for Australia, which experienced a dramatic rise to over 20%, Finland had just over 10% of overweight adults.
