A glance at the graph provided reveals the downward trend in the figures of the children born over 80 years period, from 1920 to 2000 in two selected countries, namely the USA and China.
As an overall trend, it is clear that both China and the USA experienced a similar downward trend over the given period though China decreased at a faster pace. Another outstanding feature is that the birth rate of the USA was generally greater than that of China.
As regards to the trend for the USA, it can be clearly seen that a fluctuation took place between 1920 and 1935, although the birth rate always remained above 10%. After a 10 year period of a slight fluctuation, it plunged to below 5%. Then, the birth rate in American rose again, reaching a peak of 15% in 1950. After that, this figure hit the lowest point 2% in 2000.
The trend for China has been similar during this period, although the fertility rate was a bit higher in the 1930s. In spite of a slight oscillation, it plunged by 10% to 5%. This was followed by a 5 year period of stability. Then, apart from a substantial growth to 20%, the birth rate in China has declined gradually to 7% in 2000.
