One need not study only the major cities to understand the characteristics of a society it is always dependent on both the type of cities. The main thing is characteristics of a society are assessed by studying various types of people in that society mere study of major cities doesn’t give a clear cut description.

Some type of characteristics are more common to particular types of areas. For instance if we want to know about the software growth in an area we have to go to the area where IT sector is developed and get to know of it. Generally major sectors are common in the urban areas and large cities. So it is necessary to study the major cities.
