One of the threats to endangered sea turtle species is the use of nets by commercial shrimp-fishing boats. When turtles get accidentally caught in the nets, they cannot rise to the surface of the ocean to breathe, and they die. Some people suggest that th

Both the reading and the lecure are about an invention called turtle excluder device (TED) that will solve the problem when turtle get trapped in commercial shrimp-fishing nets. The reading doubt the function of the device. On the other hand, the lecture contradicts each points presented in the reading.

To begin with, the reading asserts that TED will not be efficient because only one turtle get trapped every month. Also, shrimp fisherman will lose some of its catch since some shrimp can escape from the nets. However, the lecture refutes this. She says that there are about 1000 shrimp fisherman so it will catch 1000 turtles. Moreover, the ecomonical purposes cannot be compared to the damage that will happen for the endangered turtle species.

Next, although it is a good idea to limit the nets underwater, it is just a theory. The lecturer explain that it is impossible for the sea patrol to observe around 1000 fisherman. Instead of limiting the time, she give suggestion to always check the TED and force to use it before the fisherman go to the sea.

Last, the author mentions that TED will be not efficient for larger turtles. Nevertheless, the lecturer expain that this is not a problem. TED can be redesign to be larger for accomodating larger endangered species.
