The table below gives information about changes in modes of travel in England between 1985 and 2000. Describe the information in the table and make comparisons where appropriate.
The table illustrates the average distance travelled per individual per year by different mediums of travel in England over a 15-year period. The units are measured in miles.
Overall, it is apparent that the use of the car, long distance bus, taxi, train and other vehicles rose over the period given, one the other hand, travelling distance by walking, bicycle, and local bus declined.
The use of some travel mediums increased over the given timeframe. In 1985, a person travelled 3,199 miles on average in England, which was higher than the other modes of travel. And it remained the highest in 2000 at 4,806 miles. A similar trend also observed for long-distance bus and train, which increased around three folds. Besides this, the use of the other mediums for travelling also raised from 450 to 585 miles.
In contrast, there was a decline in the use of some vehicles for journey observed. The people of England reduced their journey by walking, in 1985, it was 215 miles on average and dropped to 237 miles in 2000. Likewise, the tour by bicycle and local bus was decreased from 51 to 41 miles and 429 to 274 miles respectively.
