TPO 03- Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him. One such painting is known as attributed to Rembrandt because of its style, and indeed the representation of the woman’s face is very much like that of portraits known to be by Rembrandt. But there are problems with the painting that suggest it could not be a work by Rembrandt.
The reading and lecture are both about the Rembrandt. The author of the reading believes that the paintings are not actually made by the famous Dutch painter. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article, saying that her arguments are inaccurate compared to facts.
First of all, The author points out that the dress of the old woman has some inconsistency in details. The article notes that Rembrandt is keen for details and he will not omit mistakes such as wearing a white linen cap which suggest a maid but also wearing coat which shows aristocracy. The point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that in closer inspection of the fur collar through Xray the analysis in the paint wasn't in the original painting, thus, it is only done to increase the value if the painting. In addition, the painting was an original art work of Rembrandt.
Secondly, the author contends that details in the facial features of the lady appears only in partial shadow. The articles establishes that the face was illuminated by light reflected from below. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She depicts that when the fur collar was removed that a simple collar light cloth reflect light and illuminates upon her face. She elaborates on this by mentioning that in this kind of style is trademark craftmanship of Rembrandt.
Finally, the author states that the back portion of the painting was made from wood that is glued together. The article mentions that the Rembrandt only uses wood panels. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the wood panel make the painting looks larger and increase in value. She puts forth the idea that the in the painting of the old woman the material was used was of a single wood. Also, Some pieces of wood in the Old lady with white bonnet has the same tree used on another portrait from Rembrandt and that is the portrait with a hat.
