Is it beneficial to have private companies in the industry of space travelling?
The reading passage and the lecture are both about the existence of private companies for the sake of space travels. The passage holds the view that these companies will benefit the space travel industry. The lecturer challenges this point. He thinks that private space travel companies will have bad effects on this industry instead.
First of all, the author of the reading believes that private companies can help reduce costs of space travel. Not only that, but they will cause the price of technology related to these travels go down as a result the expected competition between private companies. The lecturer casts doubt on this claim. He states that this is very promising claim. He mentions that industry of space travelling is very expensive to be cheap in the near future. He thinks that these companies will raise cost of safety checking of the increased numbers of space shuttles and the cost of collision avoidance system between these shuttles.
Secondly, the author contends that by having more scientists working in this industry, it is very safe to predict an increase in the number of discoveries in the space. The lecturer on the other hand, posits that rate of discoveries will decline because the high salaries of private companies will encourage professional scientists to abandon their research in the governmental companies.
Finally, the author assumes that government and people of the country will benefit from taxes that were invested regarding this industry. Being private, it is the owners’ responsibilities to raise fund for their own corporates. The lecturer argues this point. He points out that cost of infrastructure of such an industry is very huge that private companies can’t afford. So he predicts an increase in the taxes paid if private companies happened to be established.
