TPO 42- Agnostids were a group of marine animals that became extinct about 450 million years ago. Agnostid fossils can be found in rocks in many areas around the world. From the fossil remains, we know that agnostids were primitive arthropods-relatives of modern-day insects. However, the fossil information does not allow paleontologists to determine with certainty what agnostids ate or how they behaved. There are several different theories about how agnostids may have lived.
The reading and lecture are both about agnostic fossils that became extinct 450 million years ago. The author of the reading believes that there are three theories to support how the Agnostid lived and behave on their lifetime. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article, saying that each theories have serious weaknesses.
First of all, the author points out that they are free swimming predators that prey on smaller species. The article notes that Agnostid were known as strong swimmers and active predators. Conversely, the point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that other type of species swam on open ocean and they have large well developed eyes which can track prey effectively. Furthermore, she argues that Agnostid has tiny developed eyes and they don't have other sensory organ that can track prey. Hence, there are no evidence in the fossil to suggest that Agnostid are free swimming predators.
Secondly, the author contends that they lived on the seafloor. The article establishes that they can survive by foraging dead species and eating on bacteria. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that seafloor dweller don't move fast and far. Moreover, she elaborates on this by mentioning that sea floor dweller move a slow pace in seafloor, they occupy small geographic area and they are localized there. On the other hand, Agnostid were living in multiple geographic area and tends to move fast.
Finally, the theory suggest that they were parasites which is living and feeding on larger organisms. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the population of the parasites were not large enough and they stay a certain limit due to they cannot exceed the number of parasites in one host. She puts forth the idea that Agnostids population are massive to rule out they are parasites.
