TPO 40 Many scientists believe it would be possible to maintain a permanent human presence on Mars or the Moon. On the other hand, conditions on Venus are so extreme and inhospitable that maintaining a human presence there would be impossible.
The reading and lecture are both about human surviving living on Venus. The author of the reading believes that it impossible that human can sustain life on the Venus. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the author points out that atmospheric pressure on Venus is greater than here on earth. The article notes that space craft that landed on Venus were crushed due to it cannot sustain the pressure. Conversely, the point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that scientist can land on Venus by establishing floating station where balloon will be used to float 50 kms above Venus surface. Furthermore, he argues that the atmospheric pressure on Venus is of equal to quantity from earth.
Secondly, the author contends that Venus has no available water in their environment. The article establishes that living on Venus is improbable because there are no source of water and oxygen. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that chemical processes to make portable water out of the compound available on the planet Venus can easily be obtained in the atmosphere. Moreover, he elaborates on this by mentioning that there will be abundance in supply of water on Venus and does not need to export materials from earth in order to live on Venus.
Finally, the author states that little sunlight reaches the surface of Venus. The article denotes that the light that hits the planet just reflected back to the clouds, thus, lack of sunlight prevent humans to power their soar power cells and cannot make electricity out of it. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the clouds on Venus are not thick and it can receive ample amount of sunlight. He puts forth the idea that the station of Venus can reflect light into the solar power and can generate electricity above and below its reflective capabilities. Hence, can accumulate large supply of electricity that can power the Station for human consumption.
