The chart illustrates the proportion of difference in income between genders in five developed countries over a course of 30 years starting in 1978
Overall, it is clear that there was a stable reduction in the percentage of income gap between men and women almost through the period shown. The figure for Australia was an exception, rose significantly from 1998 to 2008.
In 1978, Japan registered the highest proportion at nearly 50% difference in income between genders. The figure for America was lower at about 34%. There was a decreasing trend in both nations. The percentage gap between both genders in Japan and USA was 40% and 28% respectively by 2008.
The proportion gap between genders in the UK and France also witnessed a slight decrease throughout the course. Around 30% of the figure for the UK, compared to about 20% for France at the start of the period, then the figure for two countries declined gradually at 26% in the UK and 18% in France by 2008. By contrast, the percentage of difference in income between man and women in Australia fell at 8% in 1998 before raising drastically, overtaking the figure for France and reaching its peak at 24% at the end of the period.
