TOEFL TPO 01 - Integrated Writing Task
In the reading section, the author contends that the option of a four-day workweek would benefit companies, the country as a whole, and individuals who decided to take this option. However, in the listening part, the professor rejects the passage's idea by presenting three strong reasons.
First of all, the writer makes the point that four-day workweek would increase companies profits because they would have more efficient employees which make fewer costly mistakes. In contrast, the lecturer rejects this idea by stating that shortened workweek will force companies to spend more money. Adding new workers mean putting more money into training and medical benefits. In addition, new employees need office positions and new computers which can decrease company profits.
Secondly, contrary to the idea in the reading suggesting that working for four-day a week would decrease the unemployment rate which is a crucial advantage for any economy. The professor argues that companies have other options they might choose to ask their employees to work over time. Worse, they might start to expect four-day employees can do same amount of job they used to do in five days. If this happens, no additional job will be available and current jobs will become unpleasant.
Lastly, even though the writer indicates that working for four day per week is better for people because they have more free time to enjoy and spend with their relatives, the professor mentions that this option presents some risks and also it would reduce the quality of life. job stability would be in danger and four-day employees are more likely to lose their jobs during a economy depression. Besides, companies prefer to have five-day employees in management positions to insure of consistent supervision and continues coverage.
