The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
The line chart shows the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by every person on average in the four countries from 1967 to 2007. Overall, it is clear that the difference in carbon dioxide emissions among the four countries was much smaller in 2007 than in 1967.
In 1967, the UK emitted the most carbon dioxide, with about 11 metric tonnes. Sweden produced twice larger amount of carbon dioxide than Italy(around 8.5 metric tonnes and 4.2 metric tonnes respectively) and however, Portugal played the smallest role in carbon dioxide emissions(roughly 2 metric tonnes).
Over the period of forty years, the figure for Britain showed a decrease, reaching approximately 8.5 metric tonnes by 2007. The same trend can also be seen in that for Sweden, but it declined more significantly to nearly 5.8 metric tonnes in 2007, despite a peak at about 11 metric tonnes in 1977.
Meanwhile, the data of Italy presented an upward trend, overtaking that of Sweden in 1987, finally standing at just under 8 metric tonnes in 2007. The forty years also witnessed a rise in the number of carbon dioxide emissions in Portugal, which was at the same position as that in Sweden in 2007.
