Both lecture and passage are about mass extinction that engender the extinction of more than hall of all living species. Although author proposes 3 main reasons or assumption made about this topic, lecturer contradicts this facts by giving some
counterarguments.
Firstly, author accentuates that mass extinction might be due to declining sea levels, because near the end of Triassic period sea levels were fluctuating , and when sea level fall, it undermined habitats of species living close to coastal areas, so it has broken the food chain, which cause other animals become extinct because of starving. That being said, lecturer rebuts it by emphasizing and underlining statement that indeed sea levels were declining gradually in contrast to sudden decrease. And because species are able to get accustomed to new environment , it may never lead to extinction.
Secondly, author assets theory involving massive climate cooling, that might result in mass extinction. Moreover, he highlights claim that end of Triassic period was marked by widespread volcanic activities, that released large amounts of SO2 by lowering global temperature, and such kind of climate change could have give rise to mass extinction. However, lecturer refuted this theory by stating that SO2 remains for very short time because after a while it get into reaction with water in the atmosphere , and consequently it may not precipitate mass extinction.
Thirdly, author mentions asteroid strike, which can be also one of the reasons of mass extinction. He clarifies this fact by declaring that when asteroid hits earth's surface it may leave behind crater which can block the sunlight for many month or even a few years. Thus it may result in starvation of animals and death of many plants. Nonetheless, lecturer opposes this theory that there is no precise evidence of crater that goes back to that time, and therefore it is meaningless to uphold this theory.
