The first chart below shows how energy is used in an average Australian household. The second chart shows the greenhouse gas emissions which result from this energy use.
The first pie graph illustrates the amount of energy used in an average house in Australia; whereas the second chart describes how greenhouse gas was emitted by the energy used for domestic purposes.
Overall, it is clear that heating consumes the largest source of energy; however, the smallest percentage of energy is used for cooling and the activities also create the least amount of greenhouse gas. Units are measured in percentages.
House heating uses up to 42% of the energy, then it is followed by 30% energy used for water heating. Refrigeration and lighting consume just a small amount of energy, which was 7% for the former and 4% for the latter. The smallest proportion of energy is used for cooling, just 2%; however, 15% of energy is created for the use of other appliances.
Meanwhile, although heating consumes the most of energy, it only emits 15% of greenhouse gas; otherwise, 32% of gas emissions is created by heating water. Then, other appliances create 28% of gas, followed by 14% of refrigeration. Finally, lighting and cooling activities emit merely less than 10% of greenhouse gas, 8%, and 3% respectively.
