The graph below shows the percentage change in places where students lived over five decades.
A breakdown of the percentage of student accommodation preferences between 1960 and 2000 is depicted in the bar chart.
Overall, the most noticeable changes were the figure for room in a flat and in another family’s house. Meanwhile, hall of residence number showed fluctuations, and the proportion of students living with their parents decreased slightly.
In 1960s, the percentages of students staying in a shared house and a host family were almost twofold (35) compared with the numbers of hall residence and own family (15%). By 2000s, the percentage of students living in a flat had risen dramatically to slightly under three-quarter with by far the highest. In contrast, the figure for living in a host house declined sharply with a very small percent.
In three decades, the proportions of living with a host family and own family decreased to one in ten in each decade and to one in twenty in the former and later. However, the percentage of room in a flat experienced a rapid increase with 65% in 1990s. Another trend was found on the figure for students hall of residence with fluctuated in the range of 20% or 15%.
