smart cars
In this set of material, the reading passage discusses that using the computer- controlling smart cars would promise safer, faster and cheaper transportation than mechanical cars. While the professor casts doubt on what is presented in the listening and believes that none of the proposed reasons can prove the benefits of smart cars over traditional cars.
First of all, in the text, it is clearly mentioned that smart cars will prevent accidents. However, the professor claims that it is possible that smart cars sensors fail in determining the distance or other variables. So, because cars are more tightly drive together, any accidents will create more extensive damage to cars and people.
In addition, the professor disagrees with this idea that smart cars can reduce commuting time and traffic. She says that because of the exceptional benefits of smart cars more and more people will become willing to buy and drive them. Whereby, through additional cars in the highways, any benefits about declining traffic and faster movement will become ineffective.
Finally, yet importantly, In the text, it is stated that smart cars will decrease the repair and maintaining cost. The professor subscribes that because smart cars use from high tech technology, so their maintenance cost will be significantly higher than usual repair of traditional mechanical cars.
