The chart illustrates four main factors causing farmland degradation in the world in 1990.
Overall, intensive grazing was the major cause of land degradation, while Europe was the most suffered from these causes.
As can be seen from the chart, too much animal grazing was the greatest percentage and be the main cause of destroying soil, constituting for 35%. A huge number of clearance forests were also a significant factor of degrading land crop which accounted for 30%. A further 28% of global degradation was due to over-cultivation of crops. Other causes accounted for only 7%.
Almost one-fourth of land in Europe was destroyed by the poor management agricultural methods, especially deforestation which was the main problem and having as much as 9.8% of degradation. Oceania has a slightly less percentage than in Europe by 10%. It is noticeable that the problem mainly came from deforestation, reporting to 11.3%, while the over-cultivation rate was not found. The least number where minimal destroyed was North America with only 5%.
