A little over 2,200 years ago, the Roman navy attacked the Greek port city of Syracuse. According to some ancient historians, the Greeks defended themselves with an ingenious weapon called a “burning mirror”: a polished copper surface curved to focus

The article and the lecture both discuss about the "Burning Mirror" that was used by the Roman navy to attack the Greek port city of Syracuse. The reading claims that it is impossible to attack the ship by using burning mirror and it is a myth to be believed. The lecture challenges the claim that is made by the author for the following reasons.

To begin with, the author argues that the roman's were not advanced in technology and also the burning mirror was only several meters wide, which makes it impossible to make a fire using sun's radiation. This specific argument is challenged by the lecture that small mirror pieces individually arranged into parabolic shape would definitely react for sun's radiation.

Secondly, the reading posits that it would take long time to burn a moving ship with the burning mirror. Moreover, the author says, to burn a 30 meter distance took 10 minutes, which turn to be the question to light fire on a ship. The lecture, however, rebuts this by mentioning that it is difficult to light fire on wood but not for other materially. Additionally, she mentioned that the ship was made up of a material called "PITCH". Pitch catches fir very quickly and spreads in seconds through out the ship.

Finally, the reading claims that the roman navy has their flaming arrows than the burning mirror. In contrast, the lecture's opinion is that flaming arrows were the roman's technique in their war fighting. She elaborates this by bringing up the point that the enemy never thought of burning mirror which already light up their ship on fire.
