Genetic modification
The reading passage suggests that using genetic modification on plants can benefit the environment and agriculture, but the lecture speaker provides some arguments against the reading passage.
The reading passage implies that genetically modified trees can be more likely to survive than the trees that are not modified. On the contrary, the lecture speaker says that the genetically modified plants are more uniform in their genes and would be more likely to be wiped out when new pests are introduced in the environment and are more vulnerable to climate changes. The unmodified plants have more variety in their genes and are more likely to survive to unknown environment crisis and pass on their genes to their offsprings.
Secondly, the lecture speaker thinks that instead of bringing profit to the farmer, the cost of genetically modified plants is so high that it actually hurts the profit. Not only the seeds are more expensive, each time when the farmers plant a new genetically modified plant, but they also need to pay an extra fee to the merchants.
Finally, the lecture suggests that genetically modified plants would harm the native plants due to their survivability. They will out compete for resources such as sunlight, water, and nutrition in soil with native plants, therefore, harm the native ecosystem.
