The line graph illustrates the consumption of six sources of energy in the U.S over a period of 50 years.
It can be clearly seen that the amount of non-renewable resources used including petroleum, coal and natural gas is far more than that of the sustainable energy such as nuclear, solar, wind and water power.
In 1980, fossil oil was primary energy used and consumed in the U.S., being consumed at 35 quadrillion units, followed by natural gas and coal, with 20 quadrillion units and 16 quadrillion units of consumption respectively.
By 2015, coal overtook natural gas as the second most consumed energy source and is expected to increase in the future, whereas the consumption of natural gas should remain stable.
A negligible amount of three renewable resources was consumed in 1980, at 4 quadrillion units each. The figure for the consumption of nuclear power saw a relatively larger increase compared to the other renewable resources.
From 1995 to 2007, both the consumptions of solar and wind power and hydropower fluctuated, but after this period, solar and wind power are predicted to be used more than hydropower.
