You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The table illustrates forest areas in six regions of the world over a 15-year period. These areas are measured in millions of hectares.
The most prominent trend is for forested land to shrink over the examined period, except for Asia and Europe, where the reversed is true. Also, Oceania stands out for having substantially less forested land than other regions.
In detail, the forest area in South America recorded a significant drop, from 946 to 882, which is similar the reduction seen in Africa (from 749 to 691). A less marked decreases in forested land, were also witnessed in North America, dipping to 705 in 2005. The figure for Oceania, which was home to the smallest area of forest as well, experienced a negligible decline by 2.
By contrast, Asia and Europe followed the opposite pattern. While the land with forest in Asia has a net increase of 8 from 1990 to 2005, with a small drop of 6 in the interim, that in Europe increases continuously, from 989 to slightly over 1000. It should be noted that Europe accommodates largest areas of forest in all three years.
