Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss the weird sound that heard by Russian submarines patrolling in the North Atlantic. With this in mind, the author states that there are several ideas about the probability caused of the odd sounds. The professor, on the other hand, refutes all three episodes of arguments mentioned in the passage, believing there are certain problems with those theories.
First, the writer points out that the sound could be caused by male and female orca whales during some ritual. this is because these animals live where the submarines recorded the voice. However, the professor makes it clear that it orca live near the surface, while submarines move in deepth so, it is impossible to hear orca sound far away in the deepth of ocean.
Second, the reading material argues that the strange sounde might be caused by giant squids which are marine inverteberates liveing deep in the ocean. they have soft bodies and due to this the sonar is unable to detect them. Conversely, the lecturer explains that this theory is the better candidate but still it is debated. She continues that the odd noise disappeard for some years even when the squids were living in the place. Thus, it is impossible that squids stop noising for a period of time and after that again make noise.
Finally, the reading selection disscus the idea of some military technology like another country's submarines because it may that they didn't register on sonar and using some thechniques that help them to be undetectable by sonar. In contrast, the lecturer argues that submarines move around quikely and also make enginee noise which have not been reported. Moreover, it is still impossible to make submarine that can move in silence without any enginee noise. Thuse, this idea is not reasonable in a sense.
