The professor revises the idea presented in the reading passage that proposes three possible solutions to solve the problem concerning the high concentration of salt in the Salton Sea in California and refutes each of the points made in the passage.
First of all, the reading suggests that the salt could be eliminated directly by pumping out the water and evaporating it to remove the remnant solid materials. On the other hand, the professor argues against this view by pointing out that this measure could bring about serious problems. According to the lecturer, although the solid materials contain mostly salt, there are other types of substances left behind that a handful of them could be very threatening. For instance, selenium is a plausible toxic residual substance that can be released into the air and cause serious health problems when people breathe it. Thus, the first option does not seem realistic and practical.
Secondly, the author proposes that mixing ocean water with a lower percentage of salt in with the lake water can balance the level of salinity of the lake water. On the contrary, the professor holds a different view. She maintains that this approach requires a large number of long pipelines and canals that can be extremely expensive. The government may not have enough resources to invest in such a vast project. Therefore, the second idea has serious deficiencies regarding the main point of the text.
Finally, the professor's opinion contradicts the third point mentioned in the text that believes a system of constructed walls for dividing the lake into a couple of parts with non-identical salt densities can solve the problem. She clarifies that this system is not likely to last for a long time since the area is prone to frequent and intense geological activities. Thus, a major earthquake can cause enormous damage to the system and destroy it. As a result, the high salinity portion of water will merge into the low salinity again. Hence, the third solution is not convincing, too.
