Rembrandt Painting
The author believes that, the painting of the woman with white bonnet could not be one of the Rembrandt's art works. Supporting his opinion, he provides some reasons. The lecturer, however, rejects the arguments as follows.
To begin with, the author of the reading passage states that the inconsistency of the woman's dresse with her bonnet that was special for the servents at that era, could not be attributed to Rembrandt who was famuse for his attention to the details of his subjects. This, however, is rebutted by the professor, arguing that the fur collar is added to the original painting by some other painter about one hundred years after the painting was made, in order to make it look more valuable. This point is clearly in direct contradiction to what the reading passage mentioned about the inconsistency in the details.
In addition, unlike the writer who maintains that in this painting the light and shadow do not fit together, the lecturer is of the opinion that X-ray examination demonstrated that the original dresse of the model had a bright colour that could reflect the light properly that illuminated the low part of the woman's face. Therefore, in the original painting, light and shadow was enough realistic and accurate. This is also in sharp contrast to the reading's reasoning about invalid lighting in the forenamed painting.
Finally, while the author asserts that the painting was made on a several pieces wooden panel, the professor refutes this claim and points out that the original painting was made on a small single wood. This panel, however, enlarge by the other persons to increase the size and the worthiness of the art work. Moreover, the examinations illustrate that the original panel was from the same tree of one of the other Rembrandt's painting panel: his self-portrait. Again, this is yet another blow to the integrity of the argument put forth by the author of the reading passage.
For these reasons, the lecture dismisses the author's arguments as unconvincing.
