Specifically, too much animal grazing makes up in 35%, following by forest clearance with 30%. A further 28% of global degradation is due to over crop cultivation. Other causes accounts for the stay 7% of degraded agricultural land collectively.
According to the data in the table, the region which suffered degraded farmland mostly is Europe, which accounted for 23% of total farmland . Deforestation and over-cultivation were the main causes for land becoming less productive in Europe (at 9.8% and 7.7% respectively). Standing at the second place is Oceania which had 13% of land degraded. In contrast to Europe, the main reason for land degradation in this area was over-grazing, which constituted 11,3%. North America is the least affected by land degradation. The total land degraded was nearly a quarter of Europe's amount and half of Oceania's one. The main reason for this was over-cultivation of crops (at 3.3%).
In conclusion, over-grazing was the major cause of land degradation and Europe is the mostly affected region.
