The main idea of both the reading and the lecturer is about the mission to land on Mars. Although the reading presents some problems for this mission, the lecturer finds them unconvincing and provides three solutions to address the concerns stated by the author.
First of all, the reading states that since the distance of the Mars is farther than Moon, this trip would last about two years and providing food, water and oxygen for this amount of time is difficult due to the limited capacity of cargo. On the other hand, the lecturer mentions that there is a technique to address this problem called " Hydroponic" which means growing plants by means of water instead of soil. In this method, the root of plants are floating in water, thus, cultivation of crops will make adequate amount of food supplies for missioners. Not only the water vapor from this technique can provide enough water to drink, the plants consume the carbon dioxide and release oxygen enough to breath.
Furthermore, the reading explains that the zero-gravity environment would cause serious body damage in these couple of years. However, the lecturer mentions some missions of going through zero-gravity space in the past decades which took many months without any sever injuries. He also mentions some techniques to manage the impact on human body. Missioners could not only do some regular exercise to help lower the rate of muscle reduction, but also they can take advantages of some vitamins and calcium to prevent the reduction of bone density as much as it is possible.
Eventually, the reading claims that not only astronauts cannot be protected from the high-level of space radiation from sun, but also the weight limitation of spaceship does not allow them to bring protected equipment. In contrast, the lecturer explains that this sun radiation happens every now and then during the peak of sun activity. In addition, not only can the spaceships be equipped by some monitoring and detecting equipment, but also there should be some small shelter which protect the missioner during harsh radiation detected by the devises without adding much weight to the cargo.
