In the 1950s Torreya taxifoha, a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida, started to die out. No one is sure exactly what caused the decline, but chances are good that if nothing is done, Torreya will soon become extinct. Experts are considering three ways to address the decline of Torreya.
Integrated essay.
The author of the passage is very much concerned about the extinction of Torreya taxifolia, which used to dominate most part of Florida during 1950's. Further, he points out some strategies that can be aaplied for the conservation of Torreya taxifolia. However, the speaker in the lecture cannot see any possibility that those strategies will be sucessful for the conservation of Torreya taxifolia. She based her counterargument on these three aspects- reestablishing in original microclimate, assited migration to new climate that suit most and protection under research centers.
As the first argument, the passage points out the conservation of the Torreya in its own original microclimate at which it dominated for thousand of years. In addition, he posits that the northern florida's climate is best suited for Torreya as it prefer wetter and cooler environment. In opposition, the lecture points out some ongoing climatic changes on Northern florida that will make growth of Torreya quite unfavorable. These days, the microclimate are seriously being affected by the climate of larger area and also global warming are adding further problem changing Northern florida to dry land. The occurance of dry area and drained wetland will not make it possible for the growth of Torreya. So, the lecture with the present climatic data of Northern florida, seriously cast doubt on survival and growth of Torreya in original place.
Secondly, the lecture provide example of the black locust tree, to counter the argument provided by the passage regarding the assisted migration. The lecture states that the assisted migration of the black locust tree resulted unexpected series of event that harmed complete biodiversity of the new area. Further, she states the black locust tree became so dominant and coveres the whole area, many other plant species got extinct in that period. So, anybody cannot guarenttee that the assited migration of the Torreya in far North might not result the similar events. Thus, with the example of the black locust tree and the possibility of assisted migration has completely fallen apart.
Before ending the passage, the author still trying to convince the reader put forward the argument of protection and research of survival in research center. However, the lecture counters this argument putting forward valid evidences of long term diseases susceptibilty and loss of genetic divergence of the Torreya. These evidences clearly shows that the research center argument will not work in the long run.
All in all, the author of the passage concerned of Torreya try to put forward some strategies for its protection, but the lecturer with clear understanding and examples counters the argument of the author.
