TPO 15: integrated writing task
The main topic of both the reading passage and the lecture is about the control of the introduced population of the cane toad in Australia. The author proposes three measures to control the toads' population. However, the lecturer finds all of the proposed solutions inefficient and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First of all, the author claims that creating a national fence would be a good barrier that prevents the canes from passing to other parts of Australia and this approach was used before to control the population of rabbits in Australia. However, the speaker underlines the fact that there would be rivers and streams in the route of feces and young toads and the toads' eggs could pass the fence by a river and reach the other side. A few numbers of transferred young toads would be able to establish a new population on the other side of the fence.
Furthermore, the reading passage asserts that volunteers can capture and destroy the toads, therefore the government could organize a campaign for this and encourage citizens to capture the toads and stop the increase of toads' population. On the contrary, the speaker finds this solution useless due to the fact that discrimination between native frogs and cane toads, especially young toads, is not easy an easy task and a massive group of untrained volunteers may inadvertently capture and destroy native frogs of Australia and endanger the lives of native species.
Finally, the author brings up the idea of using a disease-causing virus which would control the population of toads by preventing the species from maturing and reproducing. On the contrary, the professor dismisses this option due to the fact that this approach would have unpredicted consequences for cane toads in their original habitat. She indicates that other reptiles and amphibians in Australia may be infected by the virus. Also, these animals are transported to South America by researchers or pet collectors. Once these animals arrive in South America, they could infect native cane toads and endanger their lives. She highlights that toads are an essential and vital part of the ecosystem in South America.
