The reading and the lecture are both about High-Intensity Interval Training or HIIT. The author of the reading feels that HIIT program is a beneficial workout that can increase alacrity towards fitness among people. The lecturer challenges the claim made by the author. He believes such claims are absurd and based on faulty reasoning.
To begin with, the author argues that HIIT is efficacious because of its brief and intense workouts While the passage says that HIIT helps people to lose fat in limited time, the lecturer believes that HIIT is impractical for the general public. He claims that most people are not capable of withstanding such high intensity. They might get sick, feel pain or even get injured. The lecturers further believes this would be beneficial only for people already in good shape and to achieve such good shape you'd have to do standard exercise in the first place.
Also the author posits that HIIT participants lose more fat compared to traditional exercise programs. In the article it is said that because of a phenomenon called EPOC people performing HIIT session tend to lose fat even when they are inactive. The lecturer however rebuts this by mentioning about caliper that were used in most of the HIIT studies. He elaborated on this by bringing up the point that calipers are unreliable for measuring fat loss. Hence studies on HIIT might be apocryphal.
