This bar chart illustrates the trend of using various modes of transport by school children to commute in years 1990 and 2010.
Overall, the ways of travelling used by school children included making trips by car, by walking, by cycling, by walking and then taking the bus, and by riding the bus only. It is evident that walking was the most popular way to commute in 1990 whilst most of the trips made in 2010 were by the car.
In 1990, above 12 million annual trips to school happened by walking. However, these figures decline sharply in 2010, reducing to 6 million annual trips only. In contrast, the trend of using cars showed a completely opposite pattern. In 1990, just above 4 million school trips involved taking a car but this had reached up to 11 million in 2010.
Other modes of transportation were used to make almost equal number of trips i.e. up to 7 millions approximately, in 1990. However, in 2010, this trend ascended from 2 million trips by cycling to 5 millions made by bus.
