The graph below shows changes in global food and oil prices between 2000 and 2011.
The line chart compares the food price index in points and the average oil price per barrel globally from 2000 to 2011. The correlation between these two items was 93.6%.
Looking at the information more detail, we can see that at the beginning of the 21 centuries, the oil price was accounted for around 25 dollars per barrel while the food price index was about 90 points. The oil price fluctuated during the next 8 years and reach a peak at approximately 130 dollars in the middle of 2008 before dropped considerably to hit a low at 40 dollars in early 2009. Then increased significantly again over the period shown.
Similarly, the food price gradually increased and peaked at just over 220 in the 2008s. After that, there was a sudden fell and hit a low point at 140 before rose dramatically by the year 2011.
Overall, it is clear that the price changes between food and oil are strongly connected, although in some period the changed oil price was more rapid.
